Geological Mapping

The Geo.fi Web service offers you digital maps and related guides and reports created by the Geological Survey of Finland. Take a look at the materials, find information on the ground of your home area or explore outdoors with a helpful map. The service is free of charge.

The Geological Survey of Finland carries out geological surveying using various methods, guided by the needs of the users of the information. The surveying operations target areas for which there is the greatest demand for surveying data, given the activities in society.

The soil and bedrock survey produces digital observational data on Finnish soil and which is supplemented regionally and in terms of content, and the precision of which is continually being improved for the needs of research, raw material service, construction, planning, environmental management and the rest of society.

Aerogeophysical low-altitude surveys have been performed since 1972. In practice, the entire surface area of Finland has now been surveyed.

Geochemical surveys and research produce information on the chemical composition of the soil, bedrock, water systems and other natural materials, and of the processes that regulate the occurrence of chemical elements in nature. The results are utilised in, for example, searching for raw materials, monitoring the condition of the environment and community planning.

In environmental surveys, the Geological Survey of Finland monitors and studies the present state of the soil (including the seabed) and the man-made changes in it. The increased need in society for extractable soil resources and at the same time longer transport distances have increased the interest in the utilisation of underwater soil resources.

Up until 2000, maps were usually published in printed form. As digital map manufacturing processes are adopted, printed maps have mainly been replaced with printouts based on map data. Maps that were printed in the past are now digitised and made available for distribution via the Internet. For users of GIS applications, the map material is delivered in a document format that can be used by the application.
